Hampton Lady Pirates win fifth-straight MEAC title

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — The Hampton Lady Pirates won their fifth consecutive MEAC championship Saturday at Scope, holding off Coppin State 50-47.

Senior guard Nicole Hamilton led Hampton with 20 points, while senior forward Alyssa Bennett grabbed 10 rebounds and was named MVP of the tournament.

Hampton improves to 27-4 on the season, and has won 18 consecutive games. The Lady Pirates have also won 49 in a row against conference opponents.

Coach David Six and his team will have to wait until Monday to learn who and where they will be playing in the NCAA tournament.

Last season, HU was given a 15 seed and had to travel to Durham where it lost to Duke.

Many felt Hampton deserved a better seed in the tournament, so where does coach Six think his team should be seeded this year?

“I was trying to get out of here without that question,” Six jokingly told the Sportswrap.

“Obviously I don’t control it, so I’m not going to worry about it. I think they (NCAA) weigh too heavily on strength of schedule. I think we’re a 12.”

HU’s best seed was in 2011 when it was seeded 13th and lost to Kentucky in overtime.
