BUNCOMBE COUNTY, N.C. (WAVY)– A North Carolina woman and her 9-year-old son say school officials won’t let him bring a My Little Pony bag to class because it’s a distraction and causing the boy to be the target of bullies.

WAVY’s sister station in Raleigh, WNCN, reports Grayson Bruce said kids have punched him, shoved him, and called him names. He carries a backpack featuring one of his favorite cartoons: My Little Pony. He said he stands by his favorite cartoon and the message he says it sends — friendship. His mother, Noreen Bruce, supports him and says she wants punishment for the students involved.

WNCN reports, Jason Rhodes, the assistant communication director with the school district, issued a statement that said in part, “Buncombe County Schools takes bullying very seriously, and we will continue to take steps to resolve the issue.”
