Coast Guard officer accused of assault

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) – A 44-year-old officer in the Coast Guard will face a court-martial next week on several misconduct charges.

Lt. Wayne Barfield has been charged with cruelty and maltreatment; assault and battery; conduct unbecoming an officer and a gentleman and punitive articles (fraternizations and drunk and disorderly conduct).

The Coast Guard said Barfield was charged for “allegedly engaging in a broad spectrum of misconduct ranging from assault and battery, inappropriate comments to drunk and disorderly conduct.” The charges came after a month of investigation.

Barfield was formerly assigned to the Coast Guard Cutter Gallatin and had also been administratively assigned to Marine Safety Unit Savannah and Facilities Engineering Base Elizabeth City.
