PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) – A 44-year-old officer in the Coast Guard will face a court-martial next week on several misconduct charges.
Lt. Wayne Barfield has been charged with cruelty and maltreatment; assault and battery; conduct unbecoming an officer and a gentleman and punitive articles (fraternizations and drunk and disorderly conduct).
The Coast Guard said Barfield was charged for “allegedly engaging in a broad spectrum of misconduct ranging from assault and battery, inappropriate comments to drunk and disorderly conduct.” The charges came after a month of investigation.
Barfield was formerly assigned to the Coast Guard Cutter Gallatin and had also been administratively assigned to Marine Safety Unit Savannah and Facilities Engineering Base Elizabeth City.
The court-martial will take place Wednesday.
