CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) – Several coal cars derailed in Chesapeake Friday morning.
Kelly O’Sullivan with the Chesapeake Police Department said the incident occurred along the tracks in the area of Shell Road and South Military Highway just after 7 a.m.
Bonita Harris with Dominion Virginia Power said the derailment happened at the Chesapeake Energy Center. Workers were pushing empty coal cars, sending them out to make room for new ones.
Harris said there was a miscount and too many cars were in the lineup to go back out, tripping a switch and derailing four cars.
Norfolk Southern reportedly manually raised the gates and traffic was able to get by smoothly.
No one was hurt.
