VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY)- Another year, another championship game for longtime Princess Anne basketball coach Darnell Dozier. “We go to the final every year. That is our final destination. It’s not that we are going to play for second place. If we don’t get to the championship game than the whole year has been a failure. I know that sounds a little crazy, but that is how we have built this program,” says Dozier.
Taking his teams to six straight championship games is quite an accomplishment, but this year Dozier’s Cavaliers are limping to the finish line. “We are really banged up right now. We have five kids out with injuries who are all lost for this game. So we have to play kids who are not used to playing in such big venues, but they are just going to have to suck it up and play and do the best they can,” added Dozier.
The Cavaliers have taken home the state championship trophy four times, the last time in 2011 when these seniors were freshman. Regardless of the final results, each year a title run means something different. “This one would mean a lot to me, because of the three years I have been here, I do not have a ring,” said senior Janayla White. “Not too many people can say they have been to a state final all four years in high school. But is has just been great being able to experience it with such great coaches and players,” added senior guard Justyce Swango.
With eight sophomores on the roster, don’t be surprised if these Cavaliers continue their winning ways for years to come.
