NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) – High winds are making it difficult for the Coast Guard to reach a sailboat adrift in the Lafayette River and stuck under a bridge.
Petty Officer Brandyn Hill with the Coast Guard told WAVY.com the 32-foot sailboat is under the Hampton Boulevard Bridge. Hill said the boat has not made contact with the bridge itself.
The Coast Guard first received word of the incident just before 2 a.m. and it was reported the anchor had drifted, but was still holding.
High winds made it dangerous for crews to get to the boat. Hill told WAVY.com if the boat became a hazard to navigation, crews would re-evaluate.
The owner arrived around 10:15 a.m. and put two more anchors on the boat to make sure it was secure. He was planning to have the boat towed to the Norfolk Yacht Club.
Hill said there was no damage to the bridge so he does not believe there would be any charges.
