Suspicious death turns into homicide investigation

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) – Police are investigating a homicide at a Virginia Beach hotel after a male’s body was found Wednesday morning.

MPO James Cason with the Virginia Beach Police Department said officers were called to the America’s Best Value Inn around midnight to investigate shots fired. Police arrived, but didn’t find anything.

Cason said around 8:25 a.m., officers got a call about a body at the Red Roof Inn located at 5745 Northampton Blvd. Police said a citizen found a male’s body in an exterior stairwell.

The victim has been identified as Joseph Andrea Rodgers, 46, of Portsmouth. He had the known nickname of “Jo-Jo,” Lonnie Caine with the Virginia Beach Police Department said.

A man staying at the America’s Best Value Inn said he heard about six gunshots Tuesday night, but did not know what was going on until Wednesday morning.

Tabitha Hall said she had been staying at the Red Roof Inn for a few weeks and noticed the crime scene tape in the mor. “I can’t believe we didn’t hear anything. It doesn’t make sense at all. I feel sorry for the family. My heart goes out to whoever just lost their child,  kids, maybe a father, who knows. It’s just sad and it’s scary,” she said.
