Bullet hits home during Newport News shootout

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) – Police have identified the person who was detained and charged in connection to a shots fired investigation on 50th Street Tuesday afternoon.

An officer in the area of the Brooke Ridge apartment complex heard 15 to 20 gunshots around 2:50 p.m., police said. 

Officer Harold Eley told WAVY.com the preliminary investigation revealed two groups of men were firing at each other in the 600 block of 50th Street. Police said the men scattered in both directions on Marshall Avenue.

Eley said officers on the scene heard additional gunfire, and detained four people.

18-year-old Devonni Douglas, of Newport News, was taken into custody and charged with two counts of attempted malicious wounding, two counts of use of a firearm in commission of a felony, and possession of a firearm.

The exterior of a house on 49th Street was hit, as well as a vehicle on Marshall Avenue. Eley said the bullet didn’t enter the home and there are no reports of injuries as a result of the gunfire.
