PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) – The pedestrian bridge on Interstate 264 in Portsmouth will be removed overnight Monday.
The bridge is near Frederick Boulevard. Leila Rice with Elizabeth River Crossings said the removal is part of the Martin Luther King Extension Project.
Crews will close the interstate in both directions from 9 p.m. Monday to 4 a.m. Tuesday between Frederick Boulevard and Portsmouth Boulevard. Detours will be in place as follows:
- Motorists traveling eastbound will detour onto Portsmouth Boulevard and back to the interstate.
- Motorists traveling westbound will detour onto Frederick Boulevard and back to the interstate.
In addition to Monday’s closure, motorists can expect lanes to be reduced in both directions Tuesday beginning at 9 p.m. for crews to complete work on removing the bridge. The closures will last until about 4 a.m. Wednesday.
The removal of the bridge will give crews the ability to widen the interstate for the MLK Extension. Rice said a new bridge is set to be installed by the end of the year.
