VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) – Thanks in large part to a stellar night from its senior point guard, the Virginia Wesleyan College men’s basketball team is headed to its second sweet 16 in as many years.
DJ Woodmore, who played at Landstown High School in Virginia Beach, scored 28 points- 19 of which came in the first half- to lead the Marlins past Wesley College 79-74 on Saturday night. Sophomore guard Sedric Nady, who also played at Landstown, added 13 in the effort.
The Marlins (23-6) took a 10-point lead into halftime, but found themselves trailing 53-52 with 9:51 left in the second half. Both teams swapped the lead a few times before Nady drained a three-pointer at the 8:19 mark, giving the Marlins the lead for good.
Virginia Wesleyan will play Mary Washington in the Sweet 16 on March 14.
