NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) – Family members are speaking out after a deadly crash early Friday morning in Newport News. It was the second time police charged the suspect with driving under the influence.
Investigators said 29-year-old Kegan Bilger was behind the wheel of his GMC Sierra truck when he hit 27-year-old Patrick Farrow.
Farrow had been walking on the side of the road from the Ft.Eustis off-ramp onto Warwick Boulevard. Police noted the area is not well-lit.
Farrow’s family members told WAVY News’ Liz Palka they are devastated and grieving after the crash. They said losing Patrick is especially difficult because his own father was killed by a drunk driver 25 years ago.
Patrick’s uncle told Palka he had been with friends the night of the crash and did not have his car, so he was walking home.
Patrick’s family said they are remembering him for more than the accident. His uncle told WAVY News 10 he was raised in Newport News and had a big heart, volunteering at his church once a week. He also had a lot of friends and people who loved him.
Family members were not ready to release a picture of Patrick, but said they do have a message to others. Patrick’s uncle said if you see someone who has been drinking and they get behind the wheel of a car, stop them. He said it could end up saving a life, like his nephew’s.
