VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY)- The Marlins have done it again.
Virginia Wesleyan mens head basketball coach Dave Macedo has led his team back to the NCAA Division III Tournament for the 10th straight season.
“When guys come here, they see the banners, the ring and the tradition and yes there is some pressure to perform, but at the same time its the standard on the way things are done,” said Macedo.
This talented group is led by seniors DJ Woodmore from Landstown High School, Colby Heard and Aaron Clark of Tallwood High School. These players know all about the winning tradition at Virginia Wesleyan prior to stepping foot on the court.
“When I was being recruited, we were well aware that the teams from 2006 and 2007 went to the national championship game. You knew that there was a different standard here and that things were going to be done at a high level,” said Woodmore.
“We knew it was going to be hard to get onto the court and it was pretty big, but we handled the pressure well,” added Heard.
Thanks to winning last weekends ODAC tournament, the Marlins will host this weekend’s first round where they hope to begin a run that will surpass last year’s trip to the Sweet 16.
“It’s important. We just have to take it one game a time. We like our draw and the possibility of playing at home two weekends in a row and we like that. We just have to stay focused, execute and listen to our coach,” said Clark.
Macedo adds, “Any time your playing in the NCAA Tournament and your playing at home, your familiar with the setting. Your sleeping in your own bed and certainly you just play a little bit better.”
Virginia Wesleyan will host Johns Hopkins University’s Blue Jays 7:30 p.m. at the Batten Center.
