NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) – Wednesday a 32-year-old Newport News man made his way to Atlanta for a long journey ahead. Doctors say Marquis Lee may never walk again, but he and his family aren’t giving up hope. And they need your help.
“Right now he’s paralyzed from the waist down,” said Shannon Jeffres, Lee’s father. “He can move his arms, but that’s about it. My son is 32-years-old and I’m looking at him paralyzed. No father wants that for his child.”
On February 13, Marquis was visiting a woman he’d just started to date in the 1100 Block of Garden Drive in Newport News when two bullets flew into her home around 7:30 p.m. One struck him while he sat on her living room couch. She called 911, but police say when they arrived Marquis was motionless. The bullet may have severed his son’s spine, but it hasn’t shattered the families faith.
“It severed his spinal cord so they had to put 7 screws in his spinal cord,” said Jeffres. “When it’s your time to go you gone go though. And I believe God still had his hand on him because that bullet went into his neck and split. This world we’re living in now it’s real crazy, but I do believe in God and I believe someone’s going to get arrested.”
As they work to get their son back on his feet, they’re hoping someone who knows about what happened that night will step forward to bring about justice in this case. Police still haven’t found the person who pulled the trigger, but Lee’s family thinks he was intentionally targeted.
If you can help the investigation, please call the Crime Line 1-888-LOCK-U-UP. There is a reward for information leading to an arrest from the police. The family is also offering an additional $1,000 reward.
