Work on Pea Island Bridge begins

DARE COUNTY, N.C. (WAVY) — The North Carolina Department of Transportation announced Tuesday that crews started work for the construction of the permanent NC 12 bridge on Pea Island in Dare County.

Last week, they began installing safety fencing and started erosion control.

The two-mile bridge will replace the temporary one currently standing where Hurricane Irene breached the highway in 2011.

Traffic is scheduled to be shifted to the detour beginning later this month.
