Woman faces arson charge in NN fire

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) – Fire officials have charged a woman with arson after an early morning fire at a home Monday.

The fire sparked around midnight in the 1100 block of 18th Street. Assistant Fire Chief Robert Craft, Jr. with the Newport News Fire Department said when firefighters arrived about five minutes after the call went out, they found smoke and fire showing from the front of the home and a burn victim outside.

The victim was transported to Riverside Regional Medical Center for treatment. The extent of their injuries is unknown at this time.

Craft said firefighters were about to get the fire under control in about 15 minutes.

Further investigation revealed the fire was intentionally set and officials arrested Kimberly Renee Smith. She has been charged with arson and malicious wounding, and further information was not released.
