Woman charged after officer-involved shooting

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) – Newport News police have charged a woman who was injured in an officer-involved shooting in the 900 block of Hollymeade Circle Monday evening.

On Friday, Laura Kathryn Brown of Hampton was arrested and charged with three counts of brandishing a firearm in relation to the shooting. She received two other charges related to an incident on Sunday – assault and battery and attempting to enter the property of another with the intent to damage property.

Brown is accused of trying to enter a Hollymeade Circle residence around 12:45 p.m. Sunday and assaulting the 29-year-old male resident, said Holly McPherson with the Newport News Police Department. Brown and the man are acquaintances.

On Monday, officers responded to same residence around 4:30 p.m. after someone called police saying a woman was in the back of the residence. When officers arrived, they were told the disorderly woman was in a truck and known to carry a gun.

As three of the responding officers approached 29-year-old Brown, she showed them a handgun, police said. The officers told her to drop the weapon, and at some point during the confrontation the officers opened fire.

Brown suffered non-life threatening gunshot wounds and was transported by medics to a local hospital. The officers were not injured and police recovered a handgun from the scene.

Neighbor Catina Lane said her family watched and recorded the incident from the window above an alley where officers say they approached Brown.

“It freaked me out,” she said. “Maybe a few seconds after they said, ‘We’ll shoot,’ it just started. All you heard was gunshots, and it scared us to death.”

Lane shared the cell phone video of the incident with WAVY.com. Click on the video player above to view it.

McPherson said the officers were placed on paid administrative leave while the incident is investigated, which is standard practice in any officer-involved shooting. The police department’s homicide unit and Department of Professional Standards Office are investigating the incident.

After her arrest, Brown was placed in the custody of Newport News City Jail.
