NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) – A 10-year-old boy was stabbed in Norfolk Monday afternoon, police confirmed to WAVY.com and a suspect has been charged.

Police received a call for an assault/malicious wounding at 2:49 p.m. Officers responded to the 100 block of West Balview Avenue and transported the young victim to the hospital. Karen Parker-Chesson with Norfolk PD said his injuries were serious, but non-life threatening.

A man was taken into custody at the scene. He has been identified as Melvin Williams, 60, of the 100 block of West Balview Avenue and charged with felonious assault.

Parker-Chesson said the incident occurred when Williams knocked on the door of the boy’s grandmother’s home. When she answered, she quickly tried to close the door because Williams had a knife and was acting erratically.

Police say the boy tried to run inside the home and was stabbed by Williams. Williams is a neighbor of the boy.

10 On Your Side talked to the boy’s grandmother Monday night. Robin Miller said her 10-year-old grandson Kymel Ahmads was stabbed three times. Miller says it started when she heard screams coming from her neighbor’s apartment across the hall.

“When I opened up my door the guy, I don’t even know his name, came leaping at me,” said Miller. “He had a knife in his hand and he tried to stab me. I got the door closed and locked.”

Meanwhile, Miller’s grandson was downstairs at a friend’s apartment, heard the commotion and rushed upstairs to help.

“My grandson must have seen what was going on so he came running up the steps and when he came up here to see if I was alright he got stabbed,” said Miller. “He was stabbed and it went through his side, through his back, and it punctured his lung and his kidney.”

“We heard him screaming, he ran down the stairs, and I opened up the door,” said neighbor Nikki Boggs. “We saw him jump from the stairs to run from the guy. He landed and said,’ I didn’t do nothing I was just going to the house.’ “He was bleeding and blood was gushing out.”

Ahmad is now at Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters recovering.

“He has internal bleeding right now in his kidney and his lung,” said Miller.” I’m really feeling bad about it all. It just happened so fast.”

Tuesday, the boy’s mother told WAVY.com he was still in the intensive care unit and stable.
