NN murder suspect turns himself in to police

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — Newport News Police say a suspect in the shooting death of a Portsmouth man has turned himself in.

Newport News Police and medics responded to a report of a shooting at the Newport Harbor Apartments in the 2100 block of Madison Avenue just before 11 p.m. Saturday.

They found 26-year-old Laran Strawter of Portsmouth inside an apartment with a gunshot wound to his upper body. Strawter was taken to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead just after midnight.

Investigators were looking for Shawn Anthony House, 26, in connection with Strawter’s death, and he turned himself in to police around 4:30 p.m. Sunday. House was wanted for first degree murder, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

Witnesses told police Strawter and House got into an argument during a small social gathering, which led to the shooting. Police say the Strawter and House knew each other.

Police are not looking for any other suspects.
