NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) – Two pets were rescued from a house fire Sunday in Norfolk.

Battalion Chief Julian Williamson with Norfolk Fire-Rescue said firefighters were called to the 4900 block of Killam Avenue, near the Old Dominion University campus, at 3:47 p.m. Crews found smoke and flames in the front of the structure when they arrived.

Neighbors alerted the home’s occupants about the fire, which started on the first floor. Williamson said the fire is considered accidental, and was started by discarded smoking material.

One dog and another small animal were removed from the house, according to Williamson.

No one was hurt.
