HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) – A Hampton Police officer is being credited with foiling an overnight boat theft.

The officer was on patrol when he spotted a pickup truck speed out of the parking lot of the Bass Pro Shop and onto Pine Chapel Road just after midnight, pulling a boat, according to Hampton Police.

As the pickup was making its way up the I-64 bridge on Pine Chapel Road, the boat disconnected from the hitch and rolled down the hill. The officer caught up with the driver, who police say had never managed to reconnect the boat.

Both the driver, identified as Larry Spruill, and his passenger, Amanda Murphy, were charged with grand larceny of the boat.
