VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) – A Virginia Beach man was was sentenced to 35 years in prison in connection to a deadly shooting in 2012.
According to the Commonwealth’s Attorney for the City of Virginia Beach, 33-year-old James Jerome Brooks was found guilty of killing Laurie Escobar inside a home in August of 2012. Brooks was a drug dealer and had been looking for Laurie, believing she was an informant in a recent drug-related arrest, according to Macie Pridgen with the Virginia Beach Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office.
Pridgen said the Commonwealth’s evidence showed one of the people in the home sent a text message to Brooks, letting him know that Laurie was there. Police said Brooks went into the home and shot the victim multiple times.
During Brooks’ trial, Pridgen said the Commonwealth introduced evidence of Brooks’ cell phone records from the night of the shooting, which linked him to the crime scene during the time of the murder.
Brooks is currently serving seven years in prison for charges unrelated to the murder.
