SURRY COUNTY, Va. (WAVY) – A Surry County woman is facing animal cruelty charges after horses were discovered in her possession she wasn’t supposed to have.
According to Tracy Terry with Surry County Animal Control, officers received a tip that Amy Spencer had four horses on a property on Terrapin Swamp Road in the county. Spencer wasn’t allowed to have horses after a 2013 court order.
Terry told WAVY.com she was loading the horses on a trailer Feb. 11 when the lead line on one got loose. She tried to let the line go but the horse attempted to escape and the rope wrapped around her finger and thumb, nearly severing the latter.
A few days later, animal control officers went back to the scene and were able to get all four horses of the property. Terry said one of the horses had a life-threatening illness and was taken to the veterinarian. The horse is getting better.
Terry said two dead puppies were found in Spencer’s trash can as well.
Spencer was charged with animal cruelty and inadequate care of agricultural animals. Officials have filed a show cause to get her to explain why she had animals.
Officials are also filing a petition to take custody of the horses.
