Law enforcement pushes for health care funding

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) – Newport News Sheriff Gabe Morgan and Petersburg Police Chief John Dixon, III are urging legislators to accept federal funding to extend health insurance to thousands of people in the Commonwealth.

Legislators are debating options on how to use federal funding originally designated to giving more low-income citizens access to Medicaid. They are now looking at channeling those funds to Marketplace Virginia.

“The law enforcement leaders emphasize that it is up to the legislature to determine the best way to make the funds available, but are urging prompt action for the sake of the uninsured in Virginia – 70 percent of whom come from working households,” a release said.

The pair held a news conference Wednesday to explain why they want legislators to work quickly. Look for more on that news conference beginning at 4 p.m. on WAVY News.
