VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) – A teen who was tried as an adult in a Virginia Beach death investigation pleaded guilty in court Tuesday.
Nijel Isaiah Chambers was 17-years-old when indicted for first-degree murder and use of a firearm in the shooting death of 36-year-old Rene Victor Rivera. However, he was tried as an adult, due to the severity of the crimes.
On Tuesday, Chambers pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter, according to Macie Pridgen with the Office of the Commonwealth’s Attorney. He will be officially sentenced on July 21.
Now that Chambers is 18-years-old, he will be moved to the Virginia Beach City Jail, rather than the juvenile detention center.
Rivera died in a hospital after being shot in the 600 block of Winding Way on November 17, 2012.
