ERC explains dim lights in tunnel

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — A lot of WAVY viewers have been asking why the westbound tube of the Downtown Tunnel is so dark. 10 On Your Side found out what’s going on.

If you’ve driven through, from Norfolk to Portsmouth, you probably noticed it. There are also signs outside the tunnel, warning drivers of the dark conditions. Engineers say the recent cold weather impacts the current flourescent lights in the tunnel by not allowing them to reach their full brightness.

But don’t worry — you won’t have to deal with the darkness for much longer.

Elizabeth River Crossings crews have removed most of the old lights, and plans to install new LED lighting. The new bulbs will last longer and be brighter.

Also, crews plan to wash the tunnel Thursday night.

You can count on us to let you know when they start installing the new lights.
