NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — Newport News police charged a man who fled the scene after he crashed his car into a house Sunday morning.
Around 5:30 a.m., “officers attempted to make a vehicle stop in the area of 23rd Street and Orcutt Avenue and the driver failed to stop,” police spokesperson Harold Eley told WAVY.com. “As the driver attempted to make a right hand turn onto Chestnut Avenue, the vehicle struck a fire hydrant and then veered into a house located in the 2400 block of Chestnut Avenue.”
Police say 21-year-old Donte Solomon then left on foot, but officers picked him up a short distance away. He was charged with reckless driving, evade and elude police, leaving the scene of an accident, revoked license, resisting arrest, two counts of assault on law enforcement, DWI, DWI refusal and driving with an open container.
At the time of the crash, there were four adults and two young children inside the residence. No one was injured, but the residents had to relocate temporarily.
