Family of eight displaced after early morning fire

SUFFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — A house fire left a family of eight people homeless Saturday morning.

Suffolk Fire & Rescue and the Suffolk Police Department responded at 2:45 a.m. to the fire in the 1000 block of Custis Road, in the East Suffolk Gardens neighborhood.

Fire officials said heavy smoke was spilling out of the single-story brick ranch home when crews arrived, and firefighters could see flames at the rear of the home. Crews had the fire under control by 3:10 a.m.

Smoke and fire damaged the home.

The Red Cross is assisting the family, which includes four adults and four children. No one was injured.
