PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — You’ve heard the saying: there’s no such thing as a free lunch. But in Portsmouth, you can at least get a free ride to lunch.
Jim Nye’s Olde Towne Courtesy Shuttle starts running at 11:00 a.m Friday. He’ll give rides in the area between Tidewater Yacht Marina, nTelos Pavilion, and Effingham Street at no cost. Nye says he’s filling a niche because cabs may not pick up people to take them just a few blocks. He also thinks it could be useful for older people who may not be able to get around otherwise.
“The goal, actually, the way I put it on my Facebook page, is sort of to enhance the downtown experience and accommodate the restaurateurs,” Nye said. “As a retired restaurateur, I have a great deal of empathy for them trying to stay busy and get business, and I just want to help them do that.”
Nye drives a low speed vehicle with a license plate, which allows him to travel on any road with a speed limit of 35 mph.
The shuttle service will run for lunch, Monday through Friday from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., and for dinner, Tuesday through Saturday from 5:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.
To catch a ride, you can call 757-355-0478 or visit Nye’s Facebook page for more information.
