NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) – Two adults are charged with child neglect after police found marijuana under a child’s car seat in Newport News.
The charges stem from a traffic stop on Nov. 8 in the area of Denbigh Boulevard and Deloice Crescent.
Holly McPherson with the Newport News Police Department said Tiffany Shantise Widder, 26, was behind the wheel. Nico Demetrie Lackland, 20, Kenneth Michael Freeman, 20, a young male juvenile and a toddler were all passengers in the vehicle. Police said the children were both Widder’s kids.
When officers searched the three adults, they found marijuana on Widder, a firearm and marijuana on Lackland, and a firearm on Freeman. Officers also searched the vehicle and found several small bags of marijuana under the child’s car seat.
Lackland and Freeman were both issued summonses for carrying a concealed weapon and for possession with intent to distribute marijuana. Widder was issued a summons for possession of marijuana and for an obstructed windshield.
Additional charges were later obtained for Lackland and Freeman. Lackland was arrested on Feb. 5 for child neglect, and officers found several bags of marijuana on him when he was arrested. He was also charged with possession with intent to distribute marijuana. Freeman was arrested on Feb. 18 on child neglect and felony possession with intent to distribute marijuana charges.
