SUFFOLK, Va. (WAVY) – A contractor called police Thursday after finding an explosive device at a former munitions depot in Suffolk.

Diana Klink with the City of Suffolk said the contractor was working in the area of the old Tidewater Community College Campus located in the 7000 block of College Drive. Crews arrived at the site at 8:16 a.m.

Klink said the location where the explosive device was found is a former military weapons depot, and explosive devices have been found in that area before, especially after heavy rainfall.

The explosive device found Thursday is believed to be an unexploded shell, possibly from World War II, according to Klink.

The Military Explosives Ordnance Disposal team assumed responsibility of the device, which was loaded onto a truck and taken to Yorktown Naval Weapons Station for disposal. No one was hurt.
