Norfolk caregiver charged in elderly woman’s homicide

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — Norfolk police have charged an elderly woman’s caregiver with murder.

On September 29, police and medics responded to the 500 block of Ashlawn Drive for a report of an unresponsive elderly woman, according to Daniel Hudson with the Norfolk Police Department. The woman, 77-year-old Gertha Curry, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Last week, the Medical Examiner’s Office determined Curry died from starvation and dehydration, due to nutritional neglect and medical neglect. So, investigators re-interviewed the Curry’s caregiver, 51-year-old India Valentine, and charged her with murder.

10 On Your Side spoke with a neighbor named Cheryl who says she talked with Valentine just before the victim died.

“When [Valentine] went out of town, she said [Curry] was sick,” Cheryl said. “She said she was going to take her to the hospital, but it never happened, and when she came back, [Curry] was already gone.”

Curry lived in the apartment with Valentine.

“I’ve never saw [Curry], but I wish I had,” Cheryl added.

Another neighbor, Stephan Hayes, said he knew Valentine was taking care of Curry, but had never seen Curry because she didn’t want to go outside. He also said Valentine had a hard time feeding Curry.

” … so, she didn’t want to eat,” Hayes said. “I don’t think she did that at all. Sometimes, when people look at her mugshot they think she probably did it. I don’t think she did it at all. I think she is a nice lady.”

Hudson said investigators are not yet releasing any information about a motive.

Valentine is being held in the Norfolk City Jail.
