NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) – A 19-year-old is facing several charges in connection with an incident near Heritage High School Monday.
There was a fight in school during school hours earlier in the day, according to Lou Thurston with Newport News Police. After school, there was a crowd gathered on the sidewalk off school grounds. Officers received complaints and responded. Several young adults, many who did not attend the high school, became disorderly. The group was asked to leave, but Damontaze Tillery, 19, refused, Thurston said. As a police Sgt. was trying to take Tillery into custody, he resisted arrest and reportedly assaulted the officer then ran away. Police caught up with Tillery, searched him and discovered marijuana in his pocket, according to Thurston.
Tillery was charged with unlawful assembly (failing to leave a scene), attempting to entire a riot, resisting arrest, assault and battery on a law enforcement officer (which is a felony) and possession of marijuana with intent to distribute.
