PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) – The Coast Guard rescued two people from a fishing boat that was taking on water off the coast of Virginia Beach Saturday night.
Crew members aboard the 53-foot fishing vessel the Lauren Dorothy contacted Coast Guard Sector North Carolina around 6:30 p.m. Saturday for help after the boat began taking on water 40 miles east of False Cape State Park in Virginia Beach, according to a press release from the Coast Guard.
Coast Guard watchstanders diverted an HC-130 Hercules aircraft and an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter from Coast Guard Air Station Elizabeth City to the scene to aid the fishing vessel.
The Hercules crew found the Lauren Dorothy just after 7 p.m. and established communications with the fishing boat’s crew. The helicopter crew then arrived and hoisted two people from the fishing boat.
The Jayhawk crew took both crew members from the fishing vessel to Air Station Elizabeth City where they were assisted by the Red Cross. No injuries were reported.
