VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) - A dog owner who pleaded guilty to cruelty to animals said he was just putting the animal out of its misery.
Greg Leep told the court during his sentencing Thursday that his pet was old and suffering, according to Macie Pridgen with the Virginia Beach Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office.
Leep was sentenced to a year in jail, with all but one month suspended, which he will serve on weekends.
A man found Leep’s dog wrapped in a burlap sack behind a city recycling center the morning of July 18. The dog was injured, but still breathing. Animal Control rushed the dog to the vet. Veterinarians said they had no choice but to put the dog to sleep because it had suffered a severe head injury.
Police arrested Leep on July 30.
In addition to his jail time, he also must pay a $100 fine and is not allowed to own another dog.
