ISLE OF WIGHT COUNTY, Va. (WAVY) – Winter weather made for tricky driving conditions this week, and dozens of crashes were reported in Isle of Wight County.

Isle of Wight County Sheriff’s deputies responded to 40 crashes between 4:30 p.m. Wednesday and 8 a.m. Thursday, according to a news release.

Kristin Wilda with the Isle of Wight County Sheriff’s Office said there were icy road conditions during the evening commute, causing drivers to lose control of their vehicles. Wilda said some accidents involved multiple vehicles, while other incidents involved single cars or trucks sliding into ditches or off the road.

Deputies said most accidents were minor, but two people were taken to an area hospital after a crash on Route 258 near Smithfield Glass.

Wilda said during a typical Sheriff’s Office work shift, six scheduled patrol units are on Isle of Wight roads. During Wednesday afternoon’s snow storm, there were 14 sheriff’s units responding to the crashes with the help of Virginia State Police, the Smithfield Police Department, and the Windsor Police Department.
