CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) — The Gilmerton Bridge is closed overnight Tuesday after reports of its lift being stuck open.
Ravi Sheth with the Chesapeake Police Department told WAVY.com traffic was being re-routed because the bridge lift was stuck open. Chesapeake dispatchers say they started receiving calls about the closure around 7:30 p.m.
Marshall Herman with the Virginia Department of Transportation said the bridge was scheduled to close at 8 p.m., but closed early. Initially she told WAVY.com the closure was due to some adjustments made to the bridge, but later she said as the lift was coming down, a sensor alerted crews to the bridge not seating properly. She said crews decided to close the bridge early to repair the problem.
On the Gilmerton Bridge VDOT website, a construction schedule says the bridge closes overnight, Sunday through Thursday, from 8 p.m. until 5 a.m. the next morning.
