James River ‘floating classroom’ to launch in June

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Applications are being accepted for the annual “floating classroom” on the James River — a journey down the 340-length of America’s “Founding River.”

The James River Association says the expedition is sponsored by Dominion Resources, parent company of Dominion Virginia Power. The company’s philanthropic arm, Dominion Foundation, supports the floating learning experience with a $50,000 grant.

Students selected for the expedition will have the opportunity to go on one of three eight-day trips. The expedition launches June 21.

During the passage, students will learn about the river’s history and responsible stewardship while camping and traveling aboard canoes and work boats.

The trip is open for rising 10th- and 11th – grade students. The deadline to apply is March 15.
