NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) - If you’re looking for a good NASCAR story during the off-season here’s some advice. Just ask somebody from the Petty family what they think of Danica Patrick.
TV announcer Kyle Petty made headlines last summer when he said Tony Stewart’s NASCAR driver Danica Patrick could go fast, but couldn’t race. He said she wasn’t a NASCAR driver and will never be a race car driver.
Now Kyle’s Dad–the king–Richard Petty is taking his swipes–he was asked yesterday if he thought Patrick could ever win a Cup race. He said, “If everybody else stayed home, she can go fast, but she can’t race. I think she’s come a long way, but she’s still not a race car driver. And I don’t think she’s ever going to be a race car driver.”
And if that wasn’t enough the King went on to say, “This is a female deal that’s driving her. There’s nothing wrong with that, because that’s good PR for me. More fans come out, people are more interested in it. She has helped to draw attention to the sport, which helps everybody in the sport.”
Danica finished 27th in her rookie season last year, driving for Stewart, she was the first women ever to win the pole for the Daytona 500. She finished 8th at Daytona, her only top 10 finish in 46 races.
When Kyle made his statements last summer, Danica laughed them off. But her boss Tony Stewart didn’t. I wonder if Stewart will have anything to say to the “King” of NASCAR. Stay tuned.
