HAMPTON ROADS, Va. (WAVY) – Some public schools systems have announced makeup days for instructional time lost during the recent snowfall.

Virginia Beach Public Schools decided to make up the instructional time lost over the course of three Saturdays.

According to VBCPS, school will be in session Feb. 15, March 29 and April 26 to make up for the snow days incurred the weeks of Jan. 20 and Jan. 27. For secondary students, Feb. 15 will be an A day; March 29 will be a B day; and April 26 will be an A day.

Virginia Beach Public Schools does not have days built into its schedule, so the decision is made by the superintendent.

Virginia Beach school day policy

“Designating makeup days for time lost due to inclement weather is one of the most unpopular decisions a superintendent makes. There is never a day that is convenient for all of our students, staff and families,” Dr. Sheila Magula, superintendent of Virginia Beach Schools, said in a statement regarding the rescheduling.

Chesapeake Public Schools will use Monday, March 31 as a snow makeup day. The day was originally scheduled as a teacher workday but will now be a full day for students.

Williamsburg-James City County Public Schools said middle and high schools will still meet the state’s instructional hours requirement because they have longer school days. However, elementary schools are 20 instructional hours behind.

After considering several options, Superintendent Steven Constantino and staff members decided to reduce elementary school daily recess time to 15 minutes, add five minutes to every school day beginning February 10, and extend the K-5 early release days on April 4 and the last day of school to full school days.

If the school district has to close school for any more snow days this year, Constantino said February 17 and April 21 have been identified as two potential make-up days.

  • Friday, Feb. 28
  • Friday, April 4
  • Friday, May 9
