PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — A well-known defense attorney from Portsmouth was indicted Thursday for assaulting a law enforcement officer and sexual battery.

Detective Misty Holley with the Portsmouth Police Department said 65-year-old Sterling H. Weaver, Sr. voluntarily surrendered to detectives Thursday evening after being indicted by a Portsmouth Grand Jury.

Holley said the charges are related to an incident on October 25 that was reported to the Special Victims Unit by a Portsmouth Sheriff’s Deputy. After the investigation, detectives gave their findings to the Commonwealth Attorney’s Office, requesting the charges be filed against Weaver.

Weaver operates a law firm in the 600 block of Dinwiddie Street. He is currently in the custody of the Portsmouth Sheriff’s Office.
