MANTEO, N.C. (WAVY) – A fire broke out at a strip mall in Manteo early Tuesday morning, temporarily closing four businesses.

Around 5 a.m., Dare County Communications received a call about a fire at the Chesley Mall from a neighboring business, according to Dare County Fire Marshal Steven Kovacs. A Manteo police officer was the first to respond, and when he arrived, he found La Playa Bakery & Mini Market fully engulfed in flames, according to Chief Vance Haskett with the Manteo Police Department.

The Roanoke Island Fire Department responded and, upon arrival, immediately called for a second alarm. Fire units from Manns Harbor Fire Department and Nags Head Fire-Rescue responded.

Kovacs said crews initially attacked the fire from outside the building, knocking down the bulk of the fire. When they entered the building, they were able to completely extinguish the flames.

Most of the fire was contained to the bakery, but extensive smoke and water damage affected two adjacent businesses. Many other nearby businesses received slight smoke damage. Kovacs said a total of four businesses are unable to open due to damage.

No one was injured.

An electrical issue caused the fire, which was ruled accidental in nature by the Dare County Fire Marshal and Roanoke Island Fire Department.
