NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — A lot of construction is going on in one Norfolk neighborhood.
Monday workers started installing a huge water slide in the Broadcreek section of the city. The two-story waterslide is just part of a $100 million Community Center project.
Construction on the “Ray & Joan Kroc Corps Community Center” started in the summer of 2012. When completed, anyone will be able to join, but it is being built especially with one group in mind.
“We looked all over Hampton Roads, and there was a lot of positioning to try to get this center in a community, but when we looked at this particular area, we believed it could serve it well, not just now, but for the next 50 years,” said Capt. Brett Meredith with the Salvation Army. “We believe that it will make a difference in the lives, particularly of children. We want to see children grow up and have great opportunity.”
The center will offer day and summer camps, as well as educational programs. It opens at the end of April and will offer a sliding pay scale for memberships.
