HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) — A teenage girl was rescued from an ice-covered lake in Hampton Thursday afternoon.

Jeffrey Pereira with the Hampton Division of Fire & Rescue said a 911 call came in around 12:30 p.m. for a citizen in need of help in the first block of South Hall Landing.

Firefighters arrived to find a teen girl lying on a kayak on a lake about 12 feet from the shoreline, trying to rescue her dogs from icy water. The girl was able to get both pets on board, but needed help getting back to shore.

Firefighters tried to reach her with pike poles, rope, and other equipment, but were unsuccessful. So, one firefighter put on a marine dry rescue suit with a tether and reached the girl, pulling her and the dogs to safety.

Pereira said the girl had one foot exposed to the water, along with the cold elements of the wintry day, for about 15 minutes. She was transported to Sentara Careplex for further observation.
