NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) –  Crews are battling a house fire in Newport News Monday afternoon.

Battalion Chief Steve Pincus with the Newport News Fire Department said firefighters responded to a fire in 1200 block of 25th Street around noon. When the first crews arrived on scene, they found smoke coming from the three-story home.

Crews contained the fire quickly, but had to open up the walls in several places to make sure the fire was extinguished. The fire was controlled by 12:19 p.m.

No one was injured, but Pincus said the whole house was condemned. There were five separate units within the building and all 16 residents were displaced. The Red Cross is assisting.

Pincus said the fire began on the front porch and appears to be accidental in nature. Damage is estimated at $10,000.
