Crews respond to second Newport News fire

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — The Newport News Fire Department responded to a second residential fire in the Southeast section of the city Monday afternoon.

Chief Pincus with the NNFD said a 911 call came in around 1 p.m. for a fire in the 1000 block of Garden Drive, which is less than two miles from a building fire in the 1200 block of 25th Street that displaced 16 people about an hour earlier.

Fire units arrived at 1:03 p.m. and saw smoke coming from a one-story building, but were able to control the flames in about 15 minutes. No one was injured.

Damage of the home is estimated to be around $15,000. An adult and three children were displaced, but the Red Cross was called to assist.The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
