PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) – Chief Jim Hoffler with Portsmouth Fire-Rescue said crews responded to a house fire on Broad Street Thursday afternoon.

The fire began in the attic of the home while the homeowner was there, but someone knocked on his door to alert him of the fire. He was able to exit the house without injury.

Hoffler said the fire was contained to the attic and controlled in about 10 minutes. Firefighters are trying to limit the amount of water used so other areas of the house receive minimal damage.

Crews have to “get a lot of things out of the attic,” so they can figure out what caused the fire, Hoffler said.
