YORK COUNTY, Va. (WAVY) – A woman has been arrested in connection to a shooting in York County last week.
Lt. Dennis Ivey with the York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office told WAVY.com the incident occurred Wednesday. Deputies were dispatched to the 100 block of Wheeley Circle around 4 p.m. for a report of a man suffering multiple gunshot wounds.
An investigation revealed the man suffered a gunshot wound to the head and another to the arm at another home on the street in a domestic-related dispute. Ivey said the man’s injuries were non-life threatening and he was treated and released from a local hospital.
Ivey said after the man was removed from the area, deputies received a 911 call from a woman at a home on Wheeley Circle claiming to have been shot. When deputies arrived, they found her suffering from an injury to her forehead and what appeared to be a self-inflicted stab wound to the neck.
Ivey said the woman was the wife of the man who was shot. She was transported to a local hospital.
Ivey said the woman, identified as Mary Jane Betts, 68, was released from the hospital a couple days later and charged with aggravated malicious wounding, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, discharge a firearm in an unoccupied building, reckless handing of a firearm and unlawful use or injury to a telephone with the intent to prevent another person from summoning law enforcement, fire or rescue.
