YORK COUNTY, Va. (WAVY) – York-Poquoson deputies arrested a man Wednesday who they say is connected to a shooting last month.

Lt. Dennis Ivey with the York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office said 19-year-old Shyheim M. Carpenter of Newport News was arrested and charged with attempted murder, shooting into an occupied dwelling, use of a firearm while attempting to commit murder and burglary.

The charges are related to a shooting on December 28 in the 200 block of Thoreau Circle.

Officers were dispatched to the scene that night for a report of a shooting just before 10 p.m. When they arrived, they learned a male suspect approached the front door of a residence as the victims were leaving and pointed a gun. The suspect began shooting, but the victim returned fire and the suspect fled in a tan SUV.

Investigators are still looking for another suspect in the shooting, Christopher V. Benton, who faces the same charges as Carpenter.

Anyone with information should call the Crime Line at 1-888-LOCK-U-UP.
