NORFOLK, Va. (AP) – Malcolm Hawkins scored 22 points to lead Norfolk State over Coppin State 83-71 on Monday.
The Spartans (11-8, 5-1 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) got 17 points from Pendarvis Williams, Rashid Gaston added 12 and Brandon Goode had 10 as the team shot 50 percent from the floor. They out-rebounded the Eagles 42-31.
Coppin State (6-12, 3-2), who just dealt Hampton a home loss on Saturday, was led by Andre Armstrong with 20 points. Sterling Smith had 13 and Taariq Cephas added 10 points.
The Eagles led by one, 31-30, after a Smith layup with 4:54 left in the first half, but Norfolk closed on a 15-5 run — highlighted by a Williams 3-pointer — to lead 45-36 at the intermission.
Norfolk scored the first 10 points of the second half to extend the lead to 19 and was never challenged down the stretch.
