NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) – Marchers in Newport News braved the cold weather Saturday to carry out the message of civil rights hero Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
The Stop the Violence organization sponsored the March of Peace. The group is pushing for change in its own community.
For one participant, the mission to stop violence hits close to home.
“My cousin, he was murdered back in 2005. So by him being murdered in 2005, pushes me every day on a daily basis to make sure the families and youth get what they need. To move forward to make the future better,” said Terry Riddick.
Along the way, marchers paused for a moment of silence on 33rd Street, where a young man was gunned down by 10 bullets.
